Media Studies Department Meeting Minutes -- Monday, March 3, 2014

Media Studies Department Meeting Minutes
Monday, March 3, 2014
Savoy Library

Present: Rebecca Leonhard, Jan Lowman, Wes Goldsberry

The meeting was convened at 4:00 p.m. To atone for his late arrival, Wes brought pain au chocolat and pain sans chocolat for the department.

1. When Rebecca attended the ALA conference, she signed up for trials of a number of databases in an effort to bring the library even more fully into the 21st century. Budget is a concern.

2. We talked about Teen Tech Week, which will include the following activities:
a. Tuesday night, Mar. 11,  Library Lecture Series presentation on the digital literacy curriculum
b. Wii Breakfast on Thursday, March 13, in BE library
c. Presentations on various topics of tech interest--possibly using the iPhone as a 3D projector
d. To do--speculation about what kind of tech-savvy contest we could have (“app off”--  bracket fights. . . clapping volume to signify winner. . . chocolate bar prize)--perhaps in the library during Family Advising time

3. Library TGIF on April 11th at the BE Library, starting at 4:30. IT and Maintenance/Operations to be invited to thank them for all their help this year.

4. albatross-around-the-necks--the textbooks??? Last year’s process did not work. Rebecca feels that the best solution would be to bar code and catalogue each textbook. We discussed a number of different possible scenarios.

Possible Book-Collecting Process
1. The librarians will go into classrooms to bar code textbooks before the end of the school year.
2. Students may wear whatever they want to the exam IF they bring their textbook. The textbook is the ticket to the exam. A “book proctor” will collect the books, sign the sheet, box the books, and return them to the library.
3. If the student does not bring the textbook to the exam, s/he is responsible for returning the book to one of the libraries.
4. Librarians will have lists of which books students have and which have been returned, so students will be charged 100 CHF for each missing book.
5. It is the task of the department to replace the missing textbooks.

Good luck!
